Most creators know the YoloBox Extreme as an all-in-one hub for live streaming, recording, multi-camera switching, and podcast production. What often gets overlooked is that it also has a built-in live chroma key. That means you can key out a green (or blue) screen and drop in any background — a still image or a full video — right inside the device, live, with no external computer and no extra software.
In this guide, we’ll walk through the entire green screen workflow using just the YoloBox Extreme and a single YoloCam S3.
What you’ll need
- A YoloBox Extreme
- A YoloCam S3 (or another connected camera source)
- A green or blue screen — a wrinkle-free, evenly lit backdrop keys far more cleanly than a creased one
- Even lighting on your backdrop
Step 1 — Set up your camera
A quick note on resolution and frame rate: shooting at 4K (3840×2160) 30fps gives you a wider field of view, while 1080p 60fps crops in slightly. If you want to keep the wider framing, stick with 30fps.
Make sure autofocus is tracking your face. If your camera offers picture profiles — the YoloCam S3, for example, includes a Vlog-style look — select the one that gives you a natural, ready-to-stream image so you don’t have to color-correct on the fly.
Step 2 — Turn on chroma key
Tap Chroma Key, then toggle on Enable Chroma Key. This is easy to forget — nothing will key out until this is switched on.
Next, set the Color Type to match your backdrop: green or blue.
Green vs. blue — the simple rule: key the color you’re not wearing. If you have any green on you, use a blue screen and set the key to blue; otherwise the green on your clothing will disappear along with the backdrop. Green is the most common default, but the principle is what matters: key the color that isn’t on you.
Step 3 — Dial in Similarity and Smoothness
There’s no single magic number here — the right settings depend on your lighting and how far you are from the screen. The goal is a clean edge without cutting into yourself. A reliable approach:
- Scale up the preview so you can see both your face and the edges of your body.
- Slowly raise Similarity. Push it too far and it starts eating into you — back off to just before that point.
- Do the same with Smoothness: raise it until it’s about to eat into your edges, then pull back slightly.
Take your time balancing these two. This is the step that separates a rough cutout from a clean, professional key.
Step 4 — Add a background
Tap to add a background image from Internal Storage, an SD card, or USB storage. With a background in place, you’ll be able to see your key much more clearly — so zoom in and check your edges.
Use the Aspect Ratio option to mask off any part of the frame you don’t need. And if you’d rather use a video background instead of a still image, just long-press the background image, hit Delete, then Done.
Step 5 — Add a video (or camera) background with PIP
To put a moving background behind you:
- Tap Add Video Source → PIP Video.
- Assign source A as your background and source B as your camera, then hit Done.
- Resize yourself, choose a shape (square works well), and position yourself in the frame.
From here you can add a border and color, or swap which source appears in the smaller window. The fine-position controls at the bottom give you precise placement — perfect for nailing your exact spot in the frame.
Step 6 — Build a custom background (optional)
Want full control over the layout? Go back in and tap Custom → Choose a Background — this can be any image, such as your logo or a branded scene. Then add yourself on top.
You can position and resize each element (note: you add one element at a time), layer in extra graphics, and give them borders and colors. When it looks right, tap Save.
You’re ready to go live
That’s it. Once your key is set and your background is in place, you’re ready to stream. Whether you’re gaming, hosting a show, presenting, or producing a branded broadcast, you can run the whole thing inside the YoloBox Extreme — no external software, no extra computer, and no leaving your workflow.
Pro tips for a cleaner key
- Light your backdrop evenly, and separately from your subject, to avoid shadows.
- Keep some distance between you and the screen to reduce color spill.
- A wrinkle-free backdrop keys far more cleanly than a creased one.
- Don’t wear the same color as your screen.
