Planespotting is a beloved niche hobby among aviation fans. Enthusiasts gather near airport runways to watch arrivals and departures, identify aircraft types, and capture rare flights. But live streaming this hobby comes with a big challenge: shooting locations are constantly changing. Creators move between different viewing spots and even different airports, working entirely outdoors without reliable mains power. Every piece of gear needs to be lightweight and easy to carry.
Lewis Milton, creator behind London PlaneSpotting, is one such aviation streamer. He started live streaming at airports back in 2022 and has upgraded his YoloBox system over the years. The result is a fully portable, backpack-friendly planespotting streaming rig that earned him a spot in our YoloBox Setup Showdown.
Meet Lewis Milton
Lewis runs London PlaneSpotting, a channel dedicated to live planespotting coverage around London’s major airports, including Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, and London City Airport. His streams capture takeoffs, landings, special movements, and notable aircraft events. He chats live with aviation fans from all over the world, bringing frontline airport action to viewers who cannot visit the airfield in person.
Why He Streams Planespotting
Lewis is an aviation enthusiast at heart. He wants to share the authentic, live atmosphere from the runway side with fellow fans who live far away. He began streaming only with a mobile phone, but quickly wanted better image quality and a more capable production solution. Planespotting is highly mobile work: he frequently relocates his camera position and visits different airports. That meant his entire system had to be easy to transport and capable of long outdoor runtime on battery power.
Why YoloBox? The Advantages For His Workflow
Outdoor airport streaming has strict requirements: portability, off-grid battery operation, high-resolution streaming, and a compact kit that fits inside a backpack.
- He started with the original YoloBox and used it reliably for three years before upgrading to YoloBox Extreme. He now streams in 2K with YoloBox Ultra.
- No heavy laptop is required. YoloBox acts as a standalone encoder and streaming hub. Paired with mobile WiFi, he can go live at remote airport viewing spots with no wired internet.
- The whole system runs on power banks, delivering up to 5 hours of continuous streaming — plenty of time for a long planespotting session.
- Everything packs into a single rucksack: tripod, camera, YoloBox, aviation radio receiver, power banks and connectivity gear. He can reposition quickly on his own, which is perfect for the nomadic nature of planespotting.
Gear & Setup List
Camera: Sony EV-10
Core streaming unit: YoloBox Ultra (previously original YoloBox, then YoloBox Extreme)
Supporting gear: aviation radio receiver, tripod, mobile WiFi, power banks
Workflow: The Sony EV-10 captures live aircraft footage → Video feeds into YoloBox Ultra for switching and encoding → Mobile WiFi provides internet connectivity. An aviation radio receiver brings in public aviation communications audio to add immersive on-location atmosphere. The whole system runs off power banks for fully portable deployment.
Practical Takeaways & Tips from Lewis
- Gradual gear upgrades are a smart approach. You can start with a base YoloBox model to test your outdoor streaming workflow, then upgrade to higher-tier units later when you need better resolution.
- Always calculate power consumption for off-grid streaming. Test your total battery runtime ahead of time with your full set of devices.
- Mobile internet is critical for outdoor live streams. Reliable mobile WiFi is your lifeline at locations without fixed broadband.
- A popular add-on for aviation streams: an aviation radio receiver. This accessory is common in the planespotting community, and synchronized communications audio greatly boosts the immersive viewing experience for your audience.
- Prioritize lightweight components. Build your kit around the goal of packing everything into one backpack so you can move quickly between viewing positions.

Lewis’s quote:
“Starting to stream back in 2022 and was looking for an all-in-one portable setup and found the YoloBox. Started from just a mobile phone but wanted a better quality rich solution and discovered the original YoloBox, used that solution for 3 years then moved to the YoloBox Extreme and now able to stream 2k. The solution is portable and can last on power banks for 5 hours. I’m so happy with the setup and all I need is a rucksack allowing me to be portable.”
