And in ordinary indoor light \u2014 not bright light, ordinary light \u2014 the small sensor has to amplify, which means noise reduction, which means the smoothed, waxy look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About 4K here:<\/strong> most webcams marketed as 4K pair it with a sensor between 17 and 31mm\u00b2, which makes each pixel smaller and each pixel collect less light. More pixels on a small sensor can produce <em>less<\/em> real detail after noise reduction than a well-captured 1080p image. Read the sensor before the resolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Buy one if:<\/strong> your face is a tile in a meeting or a small corner overlay. At that size a larger sensor is thrown away before anyone sees it, and the money belongs in your microphone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Type_2_All-in-one_cameras\"><\/span>Type 2: All-in-one cameras<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>~$270\u2013450 \u00b7 sensors ~20\u201331 mm\u00b2<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cameras that do more than send a picture \u2014 adding optical zoom, a built-in battery, network or wireless streaming, onboard recording to a card, and app control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What you get:<\/strong> capability no desk camera has. A 10x optical zoom lets one fixed camera hold a wide shot of a room and then push in on whoever is speaking. Network output over Ethernet runs much further than USB or HDMI and is already in the walls of most venues. You&#8217;re buying the features, not the picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Two things to check before buying in this category:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Does the headline resolution apply to every output?<\/em> Several cameras here deliver 4K on one connector and considerably less on another \u2014 the NearStream VM20, for example, does 4K over USB-C and RJ45 but caps HDMI at 1080p. These leave the webcam form factor so the sensor can grow, and keep the webcam&#8217;s connection model so nothing else in your setup has to change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The design logic:<\/strong> if what caps webcam image quality is the lens size required to sit on a monitor bezel, then don&#8217;t sit on a monitor bezel. Accept a body that goes on a desk stand or tripod and the ceiling disappears \u2014 you can fit a lens large enough to project a real image circle and a sensor large enough to matter. Then keep the part of a webcam that was always good: it appears over USB as a camera and every application can use it, with no card, no driver, no configuration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What you get:<\/strong> sensors from 69mm\u00b2 up to 225mm\u00b2, real optical background blur rather than software segmentation, no thermal limit on long sessions, and settings stored in software so a show recorded over months stays consistent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What you give up:<\/strong> it doesn&#8217;t shoot photographs, doesn&#8217;t run on a battery, isn&#8217;t handheld, and has no optical zoom.
