What the category doesn&#8217;t advertise is what those features cost, and they&#8217;re all paid for out of the same budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Put a zoom mechanism, a network stack, a battery, onboard recording and an app into a compact body at a consumer price, and something has to give. Sensor area, which is usually not on the page at all<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Sensor size drives light collection, which drives noise, which drives how much noise reduction runs, which drives how much real detail survives. It matters more than resolution for how an image looks in an ordinary room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s also the spec most likely to be missing from a product page. <strong>When a listing leads with zoom range and resolution and you have to dig for the sensor, the sensor is small.<\/strong> Companies lead with their best number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sizes are stated as fractions \u2014 1\/2.8&#8243;, 1\/2.5&#8243;, 1\/1.3&#8243; \u2014 which compresses differences that are large in reality and inverts the ordering, since a bigger denominator means a smaller sensor. Whether &#8220;4K&#8221; applies to every output<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This one catches people, and it&#8217;s specific to cameras with multiple connection types.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A camera advertised as 4K may deliver 4K on one output and considerably less on another. The <strong>NearStream VM20<\/strong>, for instance, does 4K over USB-C and RJ45 \u2014 but its <strong>HDMI output caps at 1080p<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s invisible until it isn&#8217;t. What the features cost in sensor area<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the structural point, and once you see it you can read the whole category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Features and sensor size compete for the same budget and the same physical space. Two examples of the trade:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Optical zoom.<\/strong> A zoom lens must project a usable image circle across its entire focal range. Doing that over a larger sensor requires a physically much bigger, more expensive lens. So a compact camera with 10x optical zoom is effectively required to pair it with a small sensor \u2014 it isn&#8217;t a cut corner, it&#8217;s the only way that product exists at that size and price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Battery, wireless and onboard recording.<\/strong> Every one of those is components, board space, thermal budget and bill-of-materials cost. Sensor typically 20\u201331mm\u00b2.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are built for situations where the camera has to do a job no desk camera can: cover a room from a distance, work untethered, stream from a location with no computer, be operated by whoever is on duty this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Genuinely useful when you need those things. That&#8217;s unusual in hardware, and it&#8217;s the trade made visible: no zoom mechanism, no battery, no wireless stack, so the money went into the sensor and an f\/1.85 lens instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>One of these isn&#8217;t 4K at all.<\/strong> A $440 camera in a &#8220;4K streaming camera&#8221; search result that maxes out at 1080p30 is the clearest illustration of why this category needs reading carefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_sensor_area_actually_changes\"><\/span>What sensor area actually changes<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Two things, and both are visible without knowing anything about cameras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How you look in a normal room.<\/strong> Small sensors do fine in bright light. In ordinary indoor lighting \u2014 which is where essentially all streaming happens \u2014 they have to amplify the signal, which raises noise, which triggers noise reduction, which removes fine detail along with the grain. That&#8217;s the smoothed, slightly waxy look: skin texture, individual hairs, and fabric weave averaged away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Whether your background blur is real.<\/strong> A large sensor behind a fast lens produces optical shallow depth of field \u2014 physics. It falls off gradually with distance and renders hair, glasses and headset arms correctly, because it isn&#8217;t making decisions. Software blur has to segment you from the background thirty times a second and fails in recognisable ways: halos around hair, background bleeding through when you lean forward, hard edges on glasses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A small sensor behind a long zoom lens gives you very deep depth of field \u2014 everything in focus at once. Exactly right for a room. Battery life is irrelevant next to a wall socket. The sensor is doing all the work.
