And this feature is provided as-is \u2014 Yololiv doesn’t officially support or troubleshoot VPN configurations, and use is at your own risk. Please read the disclaimer at the end of this section before enabling.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\nIf you’re on Extreme, you have a second option that lets you keep using the internal SIM slot instead of buying an external router: install a VPN. The VPN encapsulates the modem’s traffic in a way that routes around the restriction, and once configured properly, the internal SIM can connect and stream normally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
How to enable VPN on Extreme<\/h3>\n\n\n\n\nOpen Settings<\/strong> from the Extreme’s touch screen.<\/li>\n\n\n\nNavigate to Connections<\/strong> (or the network settings section).<\/li>\n\n\n\nTap the “Connections” section header quickly and repeatedly<\/strong> \u2014 this unlocks the plugin menu.<\/li>\n\n\n\nThe plugin menu will appear. Select VPN from the available plugins.<\/li>\n\n\n\n Install and configure your VPN provider’s credentials (you’ll need an existing VPN subscription with a compatible protocol).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n\nOnce installed and connected to your VPN, insert your Russian SIM into the Extreme and try connecting. If configured correctly, the modem will now connect through the VPN tunnel and you’ll have cellular streaming from the Extreme’s built-in modem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yololiv doesn’t officially support, troubleshoot, or guarantee VPN configurations, and different VPN providers, protocols, and server locations will behave differently on cellular networks. Some combinations work well; others may drop, throttle, or fail to connect. You’re responsible for choosing a VPN provider, ensuring your use complies with local laws and your carrier’s terms of service, and managing any performance or reliability tradeoffs. If you’re not comfortable troubleshooting VPN issues on your own, Solution A (external router) is the more predictable path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
<\/span>Which solution should you use?<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\nBoth solutions work. Here’s how to think about the choice:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Choose Solution A (external router) if you want the most reliable, officially-supported path.<\/strong> It works on every YoloBox model (Extreme, Ultra, Pro, Mini), the router chipset restriction doesn’t apply, and you don’t have to worry about VPN provider quirks or troubleshooting a configuration Yololiv doesn’t support. The tradeoff is you’re carrying an extra piece of hardware.<\/p>\n\n\n\nChoose Solution B (VPN on Extreme) if you want to keep using the built-in SIM slot and you’re comfortable managing your own VPN setup.<\/strong> No extra hardware, one-device workflow. The tradeoffs are: (1) it’s Extreme-only, (2) it’s use-at-your-own-risk with no official support, and (3) real-world reliability depends on your VPN provider and configuration choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\nMany producers end up using Solution A as their primary streaming path (predictable, hardware-agnostic) and keeping the VPN option as a fallback on Extreme when the router isn’t practical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
<\/span>Which YoloBox should you get if you’re in Russia?<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\nAll YoloBox models are affected by the SIM issue at the hardware level \u2014 buying a different model doesn’t fix it. The choice between models comes down to production needs (camera count, 4K throughput, vertical mode for social streaming) as it does in any other market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That said, if you want the option to install VPN as a fallback connectivity path, Extreme is currently the only model with the plugin menu<\/strong>. Ultra, Pro, and Mini can still stream reliably via the external router workaround, but don’t offer the on-device VPN option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/span>Frequently Asked Questions<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\nWill YoloBox’s SIM slot ever work in Russia?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n Only if the underlying export restrictions on Qualcomm chipsets change. Since it’s a chipset-level issue, it’s not something a firmware update or a different SIM can resolve. The external router workaround is the practical answer as long as the current restrictions remain in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Does this affect streaming quality?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n No \u2014 the workaround is transparent to the streaming quality. Your YoloBox handles all the encoding, switching, and streaming exactly as designed. It’s just receiving its internet connection from an external router instead of its own modem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Do I need a Russian SIM in the external router, or can I use a foreign SIM?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n Any SIM that works in your outdoor router works for streaming. Russian carrier SIMs (MTS, Beeline, MegaFon, Tele2) all work in properly configured routers. If you have an EU or Asia-region SIM with international roaming enabled, that also works \u2014 some producers use dual-SIM roaming setups for extra redundancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Can I still use WiFi and Ethernet directly on the YoloBox?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n Yes. WiFi and Ethernet on the YoloBox work normally \u2014 the restriction is only on the internal cellular modem’s ability to connect to Russian carriers. WiFi from any source (including from an external cellular router) works fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What about cellular bonding \u2014 does that still work?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n Cellular bonding works if you feed the YoloBox connections via WiFi from an external router (or multiple external routers). YoloBox will bond WiFi + Ethernet just as it would bond internal modem + WiFi + Ethernet. You lose the built-in modem contribution to bonding, but you keep the rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Which outdoor routers do you recommend?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n We’re not making brand recommendations here \u2014 the market for cellular routers varies significantly by region, and what’s readily available and well-supported in Russia is different from what US or European streamers use. Check local streaming and AV communities (Telegram groups, forums, local retailers) for router models that other Russian producers have tested and confirmed working with a non-Qualcomm chipset. When in doubt, verify the modem chipset in the product spec before buying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Is the VPN option officially supported by Yololiv?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n No. The VPN plugin on Extreme is provided as-is. Yololiv doesn’t officially support or troubleshoot VPN configurations.
